The Joy of Singing

In August, Mr. Perfect joined the Utah Symphony Chorus. This fall, he had the opportunity to sing Mahler's Symphony #2 (The Resurrection Symphony), Beethoven's Symphony #9 (The Chorus Symphony) and Handel's Messiah. He had a blast! And it was so much fun attending the symphony to listen to him perform.

This month (January 2015), the chorus had auditions for more singers, so Most Happy Girl took the plunge and joined the fun. The music is challenging, the amount of music is frantic, and the rehearsals are filled with non-stop singing for 1-1/2 to 3 hours (depending on what we are working on).

In early February, the women only will be singing Mahler's Symphony #3, so it will be Mr. Perfect's turn to bring the Mamas and enjoy the performance from the audience as Most Happy Girl sings her heart out (in German).

I know that my Redeemer lives!

What an amazing statement to be able to make. I love Easter. I am amazed at the knowledge that Christ suffered and died for me. But I love knowing that He was resurrected and lives now. What an amazing thing to know. I'm so glad that Easter has come to mean more to me than chocolate bunny ears, finding eggs, and a new outfit. To me, Easter is the culmination of everything in Heavenly Father's plan for us. Because He loves us, He sent His Son to live and die and live for us. I can never thank either of them enough for this gift.

Daily Prompt: Papa Loves Mambo

What sort of music was played in your house when you were growing up? What effect, (if any) did it have on your musical tastes?

Oh my, where to start. I come from a very musical family. My paternal grandmother was a piano teacher who taught herself how to play from listening intently at her three sons' piano lessons and then helping them while they practiced and working through their assignments on her own. My maternal grandmother was also a self-taught pianist who made sure all four of her children learned at least one instrument (I think my mom plays three, maybe four). My mom studied music education at the U of U, and my dad and his two brothers played in dance bands around Salt Lake City from the 1950s through the early 1970s. I remember my dad going out on gigs as a very small child.

The music that was played in our house ran the gamete. Classical, jazz, big band (yes, it's different from jazz), old standards, new pop, and some rock. The only music not allow was anything with questionable lyrics or if the beat gave my mom a headache. We'd still sneak of the last kind in occasionally. Hey, we were kids. My brother loved (and probably still does) the Beatles. My dad wowed us all with his lightning quick fingers as he'd riff through jazz numbers. All of my parents' five children play the piano and learned at least one other instrument (most of us play the violin because we had one).

I have a degree in Musical Education from the U. I play the piano, the violin, and the voice (singing). I tried the flute and the viola for half a year in junior high. I have performed with choirs from junior high school through college and at church (I've sung at the LDS Conference Center [including in a choir for a session of General Conference], and on Temple Square at the Assembly Hall and Tabernacle). I played in the Granite Youth Symphony from eighth through eleventh grade (when I unfortunately gave up the violin). I've been hired by local community theater companies to be the music director for several shows. That's how I met Mr. Perfect. I've performed on stage in several musical productions here in Salt Lake. I have been teaching piano for almost 30 years.

I guess you could say that music permeates my life. My college vocal teacher told me that I needed to marry a man who understood music, because if he didn't, he would never understand me. I agree. If Mr. Perfect didn't know music (he played the french horn and sang in choir in high school), he would never completely understand me. I know a lot of women like to keep an edge on their men, but I would rather have a partner than a slave to my whims.

Music fills our house. We have a beautiful Baldwin studio upright in the living room. When it's played, there is no where in the house you can't hear it. We have a violin and a plethora (I love using that word) of percussion instruments. And Mr. Perfect loves a good stereo. He's pieced a couple together for us so that we have an amazing (and completely worthless monetarily) surround sound system for the family room T.V.

To close, I'd have to agree with Mr. Shakespeare that music is the food of love, so "play on."

Xanadu is calling you ... oo oo

Last weekend, Mr. Perfect and Most Happy Girl ventured yet again into the deep, dark south of Cedar City to see Drama Queen in her latest theatrical en devour: Xanadu: the Musical. She played Clio/Kira (the lead), and had only three weeks to learn the music and lines while perfecting her mad (aka until-this-role non-existent) roller skating skills. She triumphed, and the show was so much fun to watch. The cast had a blast. What an amazingly talented group of students.

Ella Mae sings Elvis

I was away at Young Women Camp all of last week. I'm still organizing pictures from it and doing laundry. It was a wonderful experience. The girls were amazing (no drama -- except for the intentional acting games), and everyone had a great time. I'll post more once I've caught up on my sleep.

In the meantime, enjoy this hilarious video from YouTube.

Home - Phillip Phillips

I don't think I watched any of the American Idol season where this guy won, but I like this song a lot. I'll have to check out more of his music. (Thanks, Dizzy Dandelion for posting this.)

Stacey Kent is amazing!

Mr. Perfect and Most Happy Girl caught a concert by the jazz singer Stacey Kent and her saxophone-playing hubby, Jim Tomlinson, just a week before our wedding. It was a perfect date to a perfect concert. We have been huge fans every since. Now you can hear why. Don't get put-off by the French lyrics. Just enjoy the music. (Genius Child #2 will love it, I know!)

Somewhere Only We Know (Keane)

We heard a cover of this song on The Voice the other night and I decided to track down the original version by Keane. I like it better than the cover. Does that make me a bad person?

When Did You Fall in Love with Me?

A friend at work introduced me to Chris Rice's music several years ago. He's a Christian artist who has released several albums. He hasn't released any new music since 2008; I hope he is still writing and recording.

Even though we've been married for more than four years, this song makes me smile and think of Mr. Perfect and when we were dating.

Percy and Harry meet Rossini

We had to opportunity to see the Utah Opera Company's production of The Barber of Seville this month. And we actually made it. We bought tickets for their production of The Magic Flute, and showed up at the theater the evening after our tickets were for. You see, when I purchased the tickets online, I picked the second to last performance (the last performance was Sunday afternoon), so I assumed that we'd be seeing it on Saturday evening. Silly me. I just didn't realize that UOC doesn't do Saturday evening performances both weekends of a run.

With Barber, I was much more careful. And we were good travel mascot owners and brought the boys. Here they are waiting to go in:

And here they are waiting for the show to begin:

As you can see, we had really good seats (thanks to a good friend and good connections). Of course, we didn't take any pictures during the performance. That's not only tacky, but it's illegal.

I was delighted to discover that an old friend from college was singing the role of Rosina (the female lead). Celena Shafer has one of the most amazingly clear, articulate, and beautiful voices in opera today, and she's just the sweetest person ever. The whole show was fun and fabulous, but she was especially great.

Next year, Utah Opera is doing Turandot. Not my favorite show, but Mr. Perfect does need to hear "Nessum dorma" sung live at least once in his lifetime. And we will not be missing the Mozart offering this time around (it's the comical Abduction from the Seraglio, which is almost more musical theater than opera).

The Drowsy Chaperon and a new blog name for one

A couple of months ago, Game Boy landed his dream role in Cottonwood High School's musical The Drowsy Chaperon. No, he's not the title character. He's much better than that. He's Man in Chair. If you know the show, then you know that means he's the narrator and main character. Mr. Perfect and One Happy Girl saw the show last night, and it was amazing. Everyone was perfectly cast, but Game Boy is the reason to see this show. He is amazing. For the last six weeks, we've basically been living with Man in Chair. As a tribute to his awesomeness, Game Boy will now be known to one and all (at least on this blog) as Man in Plays.

*and the crowd goes wild in the Palace*

Here's the set:

The really cool set

Here is Man in Plays in his extremely appropriate and comfy looking costume (with Mr. Perfect, the proud papa):

And here he is with Drama Queen (the proud sista):

And a couple more random shots of him and another friend from the show in character:

Papa's hands

My father is an amazing pianist. His favorite genre of music is jazz. Starting in their late teens, he and his brothers formed dance bands that played at various venues throughout the Greater Salt Lake area until he was in his mid-40s. He and my mother met at a dance he wasn't playing at, but one of his brother's bands was. Now in his early 80s, his hands have slowed down and he doesn't remember many of the songs he used to wow us with as children, but his touch is still perfect. After my students finished their piano recital last night, I asked Dad P. to sit at the beautiful Steinway & Sons grand piano so I could take some pictures of him in his element.

I love you, Papa.
