Daily Prompt: Life After Blogs

The folks over at WordPress have a Daily Prompt, and this one really caught my interest. What would life be like without computers? While I'm not old enough to remember life before computers were invented (the first machine that could be considered a computer was invented in 1822), I am old enough to remember life before computers became common place in every home. and restaurant and shopping mall and...

First, a little of my history with computers:

When I started college, the university had only what would now be thought of as very, very old Apple computers on campus, so I'm very comfortable with Apple and Macs.

My parents bought their the first computer when I was in high school. I think it was a Texas Instruments machine, and I taught myself some very basic coding in Basic on it.

The first computer I purchased myself was a Hewlett Packard desktop with a screen that was heavier than the tower housing the guts. At the time, my brother was working for HP, so it made a lot of sense to support a company that was making it possible for him support his family. Since then, I've purchased many computers and laptops, the latest is an iMac with a bigger screen than the T.V. I grew up watching. How crazy is that?

I think we would all adapt quickly to a life without computers. Humans are interesting creatures. We are one of the few species on this planet that bend our environment to fit what we think we need instead of adapting to our environment, though not all of us. Looking at native communities in third-world countries, we see that life without computers is completely possible (and was for most of the history of this little, blue ball winging through the cosmos). The U.S. Post Office would probably cheer the loudest as people would need their services for more than junk mail again. I don't know that life would become simpler or slower. We would find other ways of doing the things that computers do for us. Handwriting would suddenly re-emerge as a vital skill taught in schools again. Learning to compute (ha!) complex equations in our heads and on paper would catch on again. And you would probably long for your old analog T.V. and phonograph again. Information and news would come more from your neighbors, friends, and family than from your phone. You might actually get to know your neighbors. A strange concept these days.

I don't think it would be the end of the world. In fact, it might be kind of nice...

New adventures and a change of pace

I was reading a friend's blog this morning, and she mentioned that some of her favorite bloggers haven't blogged in a while. It made me realize that I've neglected this blog for some time now (not that I'm assuming that my blog is one of the ones she loves reading (but I hope so, Megan, I really hope so)).

Life has been taking some interesting turns lately. I'm still Young Women's president, but at least I don't feel like I'm drowning in the calling all the time. Just mostly treading water with the occasional wave splashing over me and filling my lungs briefly with water. The girls are wonderful, and my counselors and advisers are amazing. Without them, I would literally be falling apart right now.

Mr. Perfect still works with the Special Needs Mutual for our area. He loves this calling, and I love occasionally going to their activities. Some of the kids will ask were I am when I can't come. They are awesome (as in fill me with awe at their greatness) people, and I love them dearly. When he gets released, I will miss them as much as he will.

Mr. Perfect and I are adjusting to the idea of being empty-nesters and all that it might entail. We still see Man in Plays frequently, but he's 18 now, graduating from high school in a few short months, and then off to parts unknown at this time for college, because it's looking less and less likely that he'll be going to a local school. We see Lawyer-in-the-Works a couple of times a year, and Drama Queen more frequently, but they are both busy building their lives (as they should be) and being in constant contact with the parents becomes less important (as it should).

I'm in the process of morphing my photography hobby into a full-fledged portrait/wedding business. It's fraught with danger and intrigue -- oh, wait. No it isn't. I just wish it were. It is fraught with anxiety hoping that it takes off and that people like the outcome. It also begs the question of can I run two businesses and keep a regular full-time job at the same time. More decisions to contemplate. I suppose that last one will only matter after some time has passed and we see just how this takes off.

Life is very good. In fact, it's fantastic. I love my life.

A contest on that other blog of mine...

I've reached a milestone on my photo blog: 100 posts. So I'm having a contest there. If you're interested in an 8x10 print of a picture posted on it, please enter here:

Time for another contest? I'll need some help..

I just took a small gander at the blog counter, and this is what I saw:

14000 even? Who catches things like that? Crazy.

Anyhoo, I think it's time again for a contest, but I'm out of ideas. So, if you have an idea for a contest I could do (along with rules and prizes -- be reasonable, please), then comment on this post and tell me what you think I should do and offer.

Go!

Another blog

I hope that most of you realize by now just how crazy I am. I work full-time as a technical writer for a software company, plus I have between 15 and 20 piano students (fluctuation happens). I write this blog; I write my cooking blog; I've finished a novel that I need to find a good editor and agent for so I can get it published. And now I've created a photography blog. At least this one doesn't require me to write anything for it. I just have to edit photos I've taken and upload them. Check it out and let me know what you think. Click the photo below to go to the site.

Thanks!

Hey there, blogosphere fans. Random Things & Kite Strings has reached an amazing milestone. Post #500!!! Whoot whoot! And you know what that means? That's right, kiddos, another contest and giveaway. (And the crowd goes wild!!!)

After the amazing success of the last contest and giveaway (thanks to all five of you who entered!), I have high expectations for this one, too.

Rules:
  1. Add a comment to this post before Christmas Eve (December 24, 2012). That gives you a little over two weeks.
  2. Spread the word to all your friends to come and enter, too.
  3. Come back on Christmas Day to see if you won.
If you win, you get to select from one of the following amazing offers:
  1. A hand-delivered baked goodie of your choosing. For ideas of the culinary delights of which I am capable*, see my cooking blog (one crazy girl's kitchen). Once again, you must live within a 25-mile radius of me to select this one.
  2. A framed 8x10 of your favorite Wordless Wednesday taken by me (please limit to one that I took and not an image pulled from the internet -- I don't have printing rights to those).
  3. A copy of Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George, which is a wonderful retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, one of my all-time favorites fairy tales.
So that's it. Happy blogging, everyone!

*sigh, the English major in me wouldn't let me end that with a preposition.

The Girl from Yesterday

This is a “tag” post without the tagging. If you are reading this, then you've been tagged (hahahaha, the joke is on YOU).

Here are the rules:
  1. Put your iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc. on shuffle.
  2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
  3. Write down the song name and (if applicable) the movie it came from, no matter how silly it sounds.
  4. If you read this blog, then consider yourself tagged. Have fun, and I’d love to read your answers if you do it, so please leave a comment so I can go to your blog!
Here we go!

If someone says "Are you okay?" you say... Credo: Et incarnatus est (Mozart Requim Mass in C minor)
Maybe I should just eliminate all classical music from this right now? I guess we'll see.

What would best describe your personality? Outside Looking In (Kelly Coffey)
Maybe I don’t know myself as well as I thought…

How would you describe yourself? Symphony No. 8 Mvt. 4 (Beethoven)
I’m okay with this. It’s a very spirited, lively, happy tune, and it has a beautiful melody.

What do you like in a guy/girl? Sweet Magnolia (And the Traveling Salesman) (Dan Fogelberg)
Well, Mr. Perfect does smell very sweet.

How do you feel today? Stay (Poets of the Fall)
But I love traveling.

What is your life's purpose? Don’t Ask Me Why (Billy Joel)
That’s what you get for asking.

What's Your Motto? Vincent (Josh Groban)
What's a motto? I suppose that’s really very fitting for someone as random as I can be.

What do your friends think of you? Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (Nu Colors from Four Weddings and a Funeral)
Well, thanks a lot!

What do your parents think of you? O Fortuna (Carmina Burana) (OperaBabes)
My parents love me.

What do you think about very often? Me, You and My medication (Boys Like Girls)
Be afraid. Be very, very afraid.

What is 2 + 2? Slavonic Dances #2 in E Minor, Op. 46 “Dumka” – Allegretto Scherzando (Dvorak)
This is why I choose a major in college that didn't require math.

What do you think of your best friend? Home to Stay (Josh Groban)
This one is for you, Mr. Perfect.

What do you think of the person you like? Wolf Trapped in Ice (Ladyhawk soundtrack)
Hey, if it’s that wolf, that’s okay.

What is your life story? I’ll Wind (Patti LuPone)
Hmmmm…

What do you want to be when you grow up? Did You Give Enough Love (Celine Dion)
Wow, I have to admit that I have her on my iPod? That’s so sad.

What do you think when you see the person you like? Poison (Hayseed Dixie)
Sorry, Mr. Perfect.

What will you do at your wedding? The Morning After (George Duke)
I need to clean out my iPod. This was not in any way a part of my wedding.

What will they play at your funeral? Prologue and Tradition and Main Title (Fiddler on the Roof movie soundtrack)
I’m okay with this if they can get Izhak Perlman and Topal to perform.

What is your hobby/interest? Ageless Medley (Amy Grant)
If this is suggesting that church is currently my hobby/interest, then that is true. YW is taking up almost all of my free time.

What is your biggest fear? Box of Photographs (Johnny Rodgers)
Don’t pull them out! I look so bad!

What is your biggest secret? Theme (Il Postino soundtrack)
Shhhh...

What do you want right now? L’Ultima Notte (Josh Groban)
I want something on the last night? The last night of what?

What do you think of your friends? Conversation (Marian McPartland & Rosemary Clooney Piano Jazz)
I do enjoy talking with my friends.

What's the worst thing that could happen? Z-Row Gravity (Mannheim Steamroller Fresh Aire V)
Wouldn't it be horrible if we were all floating around instead of securely on the ground? No?

What is the one thing you regret? Introduction and Prologue (Brigadoon cast recording)
I'm so sorry for making you sit through this.

What makes you laugh? “Hm, what kind of a token?” (Man of LaMancha cast recording)
Hahahahahahahaha (I really miss doing this show)

What makes you cry? More than Just This Song (Brad Paisley)
Sorry, I can’t comment. I’m all choked up.

Will you ever get married? Bugler’s Dream (Utah Symphony Salt Lake Olympics soundtrack)
This is the official fanfare of the Olympics, so I guess that means “Yes!” Of course, I’m already married, so was this answer really needed?

What scares you the most? Out of the Ashes (A Tale of Cinderella cast recording) I've seen a production of this show, and this is more appropriate than you might imagine.

Does anyone like you? I Cannot See His Color (The Village soundtrack)
Oh, please say it isn't so. This is from the part of the movie where Juaquin Phoenix’s character is dying. I don’t want Mr. Perfect to die because he likes me.

If you could go back in time, what would you change? The Time of My Life (King’s Singers)
I'm not entirely sure what this means…

What will you name this post? The Girl from Yesterday (Eagles)

And the giveaway part:

The winner will receive one of the following (chosen by the winner):

The blog is close to a milestone

A couple of days ago, I posted about Little Big Sis hitting a big milestone. Well, the blog is getting close to a major milestone in the blogosphere: 10,000 hits. I know that, because of past issues with blog counters, chances are that it's actually already hit that milestone, but I don't have a way to verify it, so we're going by the current blog counter.

And when it hits that milestone, I want to have my first official contest. I haven't decided what to give away yet, but there will be a give-away. And I don't want to reveal what the actual contest is yet, either, but it won't be hard.

Some of my ideas right now for a give-away include a copy of my current favorite book, a copy of my current favorite cookbook, the chance to write a guest post, or something similar. Heck, if you live close enough, I might even show up on your doorstep with a dozen cupcakes (homemade, of course). If you have any great ideas, please post them.

A moment to consider the blog counter

I just looked, and the blog counter was on 7777. How bizarre is it that I would see that number? I mean, 7779 or 7787 or 7902 are more likely to be seen.

Just wanted to share my joy in all of this perusing ya'll are doing. Thanks!

The names have been changed to protect the guilty...

Times change. People change. Pseudo names on this blog change. Introducing the updated Kite Strings names:

Mr. Perfect will continue to be Mr. Perfect because he is still... well... perfect.

Most Happy Girl will also continue to be the Most Happy of Girls.

Super Swim Chick has become Lawyer-in-the-Works as she finishes up undergrad work and makes the transition next year into law school.

Beatles Lover is now Drama Queen, because it's just a much more accurate way to describe her.

Game Boy is still into games, so he will remain the same. Thanks, GB!

Psycho Wunderdhund will always be psychotic, though he is starting to show miniscule signs of slowing and calming down (still can't just sit there and blissfully stroke his head without him trying to playfully bite your hand off).
